NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM If you ever sought an honest unbiased look at the Civil War, then this is the museum for you. The museum is situated on a magnificent hilltop surrounded by trees, and depending on the season, it offers a magnificent vista of Harrisburg. You don't have to be a history buff to appreciate the many viewpoints which examines the causes and sides - President Lincoln, the generals, the plantation owners, common folk, immigrants, and the slaves. The exhibits are balanced for all ages, offering videos of people's lives during and after the war, educational exhibits, and artifacts which will intrigue both the novice and historian.
FORT HUNTER Built on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce, and an exclusive private estate. It was originally settled in 1725 by Benjamin Chambers, who later founded Chambersburg. Faced with the mounting threat of the French and Indian War, the British built a series of small forts from Harris Ferry (Harrisburg). Where else can you visit a covered bridge, a tavern restored to the mid-19th century, a historic church, a centennial barn built in 1876 and 19th century mansion.

United States Army Heritage and Education Center, Carlisle. Just a short ride down US 81, is one of the area's most interesting and educational facilities. The center offers both indoor and outdoor facilities, lectures, workshops, galleries of archives, and historical demonstrations. Here the visitor can learn the history of America's army spanning the French and Indian war, through our present war on Terrorism. Individual exhibits which include full scale reconstructions like Redoubt Number 10 from the Revolutionary War at Yorktown, through an interpretation of the Vietnam helicopter air assault at Ia Drang that includes a period Fire Support Base. Additionally, there are numerous smaller exhibits featuring armor, aircraft, and artillery from several different eras of U.S. Army history.
